Chain guard question

I need to install a chain guard before I can go for my provisional license. I bought one off eBay (77-81) and slid it up past the tyre. It's obvious how the back of it bolts on but Haynes shows the guard bolts down at the front from above. The guard's front bracket appears to bolt on from the side. What gives? Haynes doesn't show any other L bracket and I don't have one in my bits box.

Forget it. Apparently the 77 has a different chain guard to 78-81. Of course! Now I have to find one locally and get in on in 10 days!!

The back bracket its wrong too and doesn't seem to place it in the right spot. I just found one that should do the trick on eBay. $80 inc post for a rusty old thing.

77-79 xs400 uses a different setup than the 80-82 sohc ones. At least the u.s. models do.
