Finally got a day to work on the bike

Been a while since I've had time to post progress photos. Original thread was started as a troubleshooting post so thought I'd post the full set from stock to current. '81 XS400 Special II I picked up from a friend.
So far, LED update from head to tail. Shorty pipes with black header wrap. Rejetted carb and DCC speedo and tach. Cafe clip ons and new grips. I didn't like how long the seat was so today cut the frame, shortened and welded on rear hoop. Fabbed rear shock mount gussets and electronics pan. Deleted main battery and installed mini battery(now kick start only). Working on making seat base and cover next. Fun project so far. Debating on keeping cafe or going tracker with new bars and knobby tires...

been working 12-14 hour days still at work but getting some work done on the weekends. Well, last weekend I had a mishap and broke the stator cover so that set me back a little. Ordered up a used one off ebay and a gasket set. Deleted the starter and put in a freeze plug. Got in new LED tail light and bar end mirrors. Today I customized and attached my old rear fender and mounted the tail light. Also made an aluminum license plate bracket.

Id like to get longer shocks for the rear and put on some Dual sport tires. I have the 16 rear 18" front combo. Any advice from those who have change both and what they used would be awesome! I was going to go with the Duro 904 130/90-16 rear and a 120/90-18 front because im having a hard time finding a good combo with these funky wheel sizes.... Thoughts?

I picked this up a few weeks ago 1980 XS1100 Special. 29,000 miles on it. Runs like a top but UGLY. it's going on a diet starting with the fairing

I have one to and love it........took me a few to get it running well but now runs like a raped ape.........

Mine had a fairing but I told the guy I bought it from to keep it I wasnt going to use it.......Hell I need to get another seat I swear a third world country could hang out on those things.......

I just put it back together last weekend.

I may need to pick your brain once I get done with the 400 and start on the 1100. Looks good!! What exhaust did you go with? This came with a Kerker 4-1 on it and sounds decent but looking at options.

Mine came with a 4 into 1 with a super trap on it. I actually like the sound but hate no center stand. I did buy a MAC 4 to 2 but it didn't come with clamps......so just tossed the old one back on after painting the header.

I have re jetted the carbs and it runs good now. I bought it as a project with issues.......but now things look good.
