Hello there...This is my first post... and its out of DESPERATION!!! :) I picked up an 82 maxim 400 last fall and was told it needed some carb work, which was fine. What I wasn't told was that this fella must have beat the starter to death trying to deal with the bikes problems himself. Long story short, I ended up frying the starter! I am not the most mechanically inclined person in the world, so I took it to my local automotive electrical specialist. They spent a day calling "around the country" to try and find rebuild parts for it and came up with nothing. So now I have this awesome bike that only has 1500 miles on it, thats right, only 1500 and is in about 95% original/excellent shape and I am stuck without a starter. I need a starter to be able to take it to a shop and get the starting problem i have figured out, since that is what killed the starter. Is there ANY one out there that can help!!! An old starter, rebuild kit, some kind of end around that will work! I didnt sink a lot of money into getting the bike, so i would love to get it running and am willing to spend a little to get the bugs worked out, but without a starter I am stuck! Any help would be appreciated. Thank You!

Thank you all for your responses. I did manage to find a place online, after looking up XS 400 Seca and found a re manufactured starter with a one year warranty for a 82 xs400 maxim!

http://www.nationsautoelectric.com/Yamaha.html

It was a little more then I wanted to pay, but anything I found on ebay was anywhere from 65 to 80 bucks with no warranty, so why not take a shot.

Now if I was more mechaniclly inclinded, maybe I could figure out why the darn thing doesn't like to start. Once I got it running, it seemed ok, after I backed the idle down a bit. Previous owner must have monkeyed with it, cause she went a racing once I got it going.

Also, have any of you ever had problems with the vaccum petcock? I am curious if that may be some of the problem. Took it all apart and it looked good, nothing looked dried out or cracked. This is the first bike Ive been around with out a designated "off" position.

Thanks again for your help!
