Ok, to the best of my knowledge, you have a 82/83 Maxim, Look at the neck or near the kick stand for the serial number, typcially the first 3 digits will nail what year/model you have.

Next, follow drewpy's re-wire, listed on the front page, tech section and many many times. use the sodergun, use the good crimper (not one for speakers)

I have the same bike and if you decide that you cant fix it or not worth it I could use a parts bike.
