Hello all, so when I originally purchased my xs400 the owner gave me a handful of extra tires that he had for it. My bike currently has a front tire with a drum break and a flat. I am trying to put this other tire on the front but cannot figure out how to take apart the drum brake so I can replace the shoes and clean it up. Anyone know how this drum brake comes apart just by looking at it? The rod through the middle does not slide out either way (even tried tapping it with a mallet) and there are no screws that seem to be holding it in place.

I have a '77 Xs360 and the front drum looks very close to yours but not exactly the same.. On mine the only thing in the way is a small spacer on the side opposite of the drum and then the axle just slides through. When the wheel comes off the drum simply just pulls off.
Maybe you need to beat on that harder to get it to separate?

That axle should slide right out.......I have an 80 or 81 with drums and it all just slid right apart.

Yes the drum break that is currently on my bike has an axle that just slides right out and comes apart that is why this is confusing me so much.

Looks like the threaded end has a weird nut screwed onto it. Remove it and it should slide out.
