Fuel Gauge and a newbie question

I was wondering if anyone has successfully put a fuel guage on an xs400?

I'm still getting used to the bike, my question is, which way should I turn the petcock for the reserve section of the tank.

I have a xs550 tank on mine,which has a place for a gauge,but doesn't have one.I bought the tank when I discovered that mine had holes rusted through and had been lined with something,which is peeling inside,and the new one is pristine.The 550 tank is fatter and shorter.You could probably put a gauge from a 550 or some other bike having a gauge.then you'd have to get a sending unit and wire it up,etc. good luck. lha
