I may have screwed up!!

So I was putting in new steering head bearings and tightened the adjustment nut until the lower bearing and seal seated all the way. I then backed it of until it was easy to move back and forth. I was reading posts and websites to find out if I did mess up, but couldn't find anything.
So did I screw up by tightening it that far or did I do it right?

if its not notchy then your OK.

they will need retightening when it beds in

Thanks Drewpy! It is smooth left and right.
Not sure how tight your supposed to tighten it? I pretty much went all the way tight, and then backed it off until in went side to side with little effort.
