I have two XS400 manuals, with two different clearance ranges for the intake valves (exhaust clearances match).

Which are they?

1) 0.11 ~ 0.15 mm
0.004 ~ 0.006 in

2) 0.08 ~ 0.12 mm
0.003 ~ 0.005 in

ALSO one of the manuals mentioned something about turning the motor counter-clockwise when getting the exhaust valves at TDC. That can't be right, can it?

I just did mine last week, and your right, It does turn anti-clockwise is what I read somewhere. and don't go clockwise. I found my feeler gauges were metric, and didn't include all the numbers, so I did find one feeler that was in-between those 2 numbers and set it to that number. I don't remember, but I think I ended up going with .10 on the one, and .15 on the other. Since one person tool chest is different anyone else's, and not everyone can run out and get a new Craftsman do it all tool, that someone has done it right, and not needed that special "snap-on" tool.

Check out these links. They helped me.

Search on keywords "valve clearance" it seems from time to time, all of us go for a bike ride, so when no one is home during the summer time, someone will look though here, and help out when we can. remember, not everyone has done that, so the 35 to 50 some people that are browsing, are doing searches to fix their problems. So give us some time, a pic if your doing something special While I am thinking of it, Let me google that for you, My new favorite site!
