Is it possible to completely get rid of the battery?

So I'm not sure how it works on most bikes (my '81 XS400 is my first), but my the electric start does not work whatsoever, so i am always forced to kickstart (which is fine with me, I like kickstart better anyways). But the weird thing is that the kickstart does not work unless the battery has reached a certain level of charge. Is it possible to completely remove the battery from the bike but keep the kickstart working? If so, how difficult/a pain in the butt is it?

There is a member that did a p.m.a setup ( search the forum for it) but it takes a lot of modding to do it. Make sure your bike has a good charged battery in it or it won't start. If the bike is not charging or the battery is bad I would fix those issues first.
