My 77 XS400D has been leaking oil out of the bottom of the motor, not sure where it is coming from.I want to know if anyone knows some simple maintenance for it. I also wanted to know what motor oil to use for this old rat bike. I just bought it a week ago. Thanks.

Walmart sells a valvoline 20w-50 motorcycle oil for wet clutch for like $4 a quart. As for the oil leak wipe off the bottom and try to see where it is coming from.

I think most of us have had leaks from time to time- as Chris said, we need to know where it's from to tell whether it's and easy fix or not- it very well may be.

My bike is leaking oil too. The usual suspects are under the sprocket cover. I degreased and pressure washed in there. Ran the bike for 10min. And could see the oil start to come out of the clutch pushrod seal. Easy fix. As for the oil, myself and I think more than a few of us on here use Rotella 15-40 deisel oil.
