Need Help Identifying Bike

Just got a free bike from my brother. He claims it is an XS400. The VIN is 1J3-200300. Did some searching around this forum and it says the bike is an XS500C/D but I can't find a year. My brother insists it's a XS400 though. Can anyone help identify this bike and the year?

Hey Austin, welcome to the site. Post a pic of the bike.

My list shows 1J3 as either a 1976 XS500C or a 1977 XS500D.

If you look closely at the engine it'll say how many cc it is. It's probably on the front.

Is there any way to find out exactly which year this XS500 is? Or will parts from 76 and 77 both work on the bike? Also can somebody point me in the direction of a shop manual for the XS500? I really need a wiring diagram but it would be nice to have the entire manual.

Somebody there will probably have a PDF wiring diagram they might share with you. There might be a manual available there as well. Other than that my best suggestion for a manual is the dreaded E-bay.
