Need help to figure out why my 1982 xs400j bogs.

My 82 maxim xs400j idles great but as soon as I take off and start upshifting it starts to bogs. I cant figure it out, I just rebuilt the carbs. Can't go any faster the 30 mph.
Does anybody no what it could be?

I found that site very helpful for many repairs.Very good reading.
I think 1/4 throttle to 3/4 throttle problems may be needle jet/needle,sliders maybe.
You could also check float height? Good luck!

Did the bogging seem more to do with RPM rather than speed?
It's been a few seasons since it last happened to me but I've (only) had that happen when the bike sat outdoors overnight in higher humidity, say after a rain.

I never tracked the issue down but I wonder if it had to do with old/cracked plug wires? Maybe arcing was occurring beyond a certain RPM?

It almost felt like a rev limiter around 3500...you'd hit it and then lose almost all power until the RPMs dropped again. This made for slow travel even in 5th gear. I usually turned around and brought it home.
