1980 yamaha xs400 special alloy wheels. Front tire I think is right but the back tire is huge and barely fits. So what are the factory tire sizes. I'm looking to run dual sport or dirt sport tires. There is a 3.5 by 18 tire that I like but is this too narrow? Also is the alloy wheel a tube tire wheel or no?

I just put two dual sports on mine. I think the factory size is 110/90-18. I put a Kenda k-761 120/80-18 in rear and a 110/80-18 in front and have no clearance issues (no front or rear fender though). It looks just about right.

I'm pretty sure they went to tubeless in 1980 on the alloys. Don't quote me on that. I believe I've read that it's stamped on the rim somewhere(?).

I guess you have 18" in the front and a 16" rear (the same as I do), Jacob probably has 18/18 as his bike is pre 1980.
And Kenda k-761 only has 100/90-16 for our rear wheel, which probably is too small, please correct me if I'm wrong. ( actually I'd be really happy to be wrong)
I'm also having problem finding a nice set of dual sport tires for my 18/16, so I'd be glad if someone offered a solution.

I've got 110/90 18's in the front and 130/90 16 in the back. It JUST clears the chain and brake support lever. Shinko tires are what i'm running.

My back is the same way it is sooooo close it scares me, I'd really like something more narrow. which shinkos are you running?
