Hey guys, I'm new here, obviously, and I'm in the process of converting my 82 xs400 into a cafe bike.

I noticed that the mufflers have a small bolt which looked to be keeping the internals in place. I removed the bolts on both mufflers and tried popping the internals out with a broom stick and failed miserably.

This is my first bike, so go easy haha. If there's a special way to remove the packing then I'm all ears.....or eyes.

(I aware that I'll have to rejet in order for the bike to not lean out)

Cheers! :bike:

I think those are aftermarket, but if there is only one bolt it is likely that rust is holding it together. Heat and a penetrating oil might help. If you have a big enough vise you may be able to wrap rubber tubing around it (bicycle inner tube) to hold it steady while you beat the life out of it.

Thanks man, I'll give it a shot tonight. I was going to run straight pipes and just clamp on extensions but I think the muffler housing will produce a better sound.

What size is our header pipes?

def aftermarket. perhaps a little soaking may dislodge it. bung up the outlet and pour a gall of diesel in there and leave to mature for a few days!

From what I see they look like a stock 78-79 muffler with the end slash cut off. Some sort of end from an aftermarket pushed up in there and then a screw or bolt to hold it down.:twocents:

Yeah haha, who knows. All I know is that I'm not gonna go easy on them lol. Thanks for the help guys, I'll throw some pics up of my progress soon once my clip-ons arrive.
