Running Without A Battery

Hey guys, new to the forum. I was just wondering, if I take the battery and electric start out of the 1980 XS 400 will the lights still run?

Hi welcome!

You cant remove the battery from an xs400 because its alternator uses a field coil, meaning there must be a charge for the system to work. So if you have a dead battery your bike wont start even if you kick or bump start it. You can convert to a permanent magnet rotor that doesn't have a field coil and can remove the batter and replace it with a small capacitor. There is a thread on it here somewhere.

You can remove the e-start and go kick only but will still need a battery to run the bike.
 
The next best thing would go to those gel batteries that are small and can be hidden under the seat.As noticed there is a thread that explains how to go batterieless but its quie pricy.
