slip on muffler not tight seal

Just got some universal slip on mufflers. It came with the pictured adapter. If I don't use the adapter, I can't seem to tighten the clamp enough to secure muffler on the header. If I use one of the 3 concentric adapters it is very snug but still leaks at the adapter rings S joint. Do I use some exhaust sealant there or am I doing this totally wrong? I'm assuming the adapter goes on the outside of the header and inside of the muffler.

Permatex Ultra Copper silicone sealant. Wear gloves, and tape areas you don't want copper coloured. This stuff works!

I was going to suggest to wrapped the area with exhaust tape

Thanks. Already picked up some Permatex ( and hand cleaner) so I'll give that a shot tonight.

Permatex Ultra Copper worked fine. Everything tight and much quieter - but not too quiet.
Just right... Tried to upload a wav file but got "ERROR".
