starter motor issues

Hi.i went to turn over the engine on my xs400.and there was a load of gronching sounds.. but when I take the plugs out its fine spins over no probs.. put the spark plugs back in and gronching again. obviously there is a problem when its under load... im in the middle of a project and the bike hasn't run for a long time but I spin it over now and then just to keep it lubed up....... any thoughts ... thanks

Hi the battery is very good.... don't know about the starter being dry il investigate... thanks for the reply
