Hi all
Simple question - would the guts of the charging system (stator, coil, etc..) from an '82 XS SE fit into my '79?
There's a local guy selling an engine and, if it works, I wanna scoop it up.

Tx!

The 80-82 sohc xs400 ones have one less wire(3) coming from it than the 77-79 points model(4). I would look at the stock wiring diagrams to see what it is used for. I think it is for the ignition.

Looks like it controls the cutoff relay for the lights.
I'm not as up-to-date on my generator windings as I should be but you may be able to tap voltage for the relay off another point. I suspect being center tapped that it handles a different voltage than the other windings provide though.

Electrically the point that the fourth wire taps off of is still there but may not be accessible to actually wire to. My 360 has the fourth wire, it just doesn't connect to anything. The later bikes may still have it hidden in there.

Otherwise you could bypass the lighting relay, it'd just mean the load on the battery would be slightly higher while starting. The pre-'79 bikes got away with it.
