So it sounds like the puller is a bad idea and I struck out on finding an m16- 1.5 bolt locally (. Nothing on ebay but I found a five pack on amazon for $15:(

anyone have other ideas? Would an auto reapair shop be likely to have one of these bolts around?

I was under the impression that using a 3 arm gear puller was a bad idea and there was a liklihood of damaging the cast metal?
A gear puller would work without busting anything expensive?

DO NOT USE A 3 ARM PULLER...

The bolt you are talking about is actually called a Flywheel puller.. it is simply a bolt you screw into the crank shaft.. once finger tight or snug with a wrench (not impact or something stupid tight) hit it with a hammer.. tighten a little more and hit it again.. about 3 whacks or less and the flywheel/stator should pop off..

A puller (bolt looking thing) for $12 is a decent investment and its made of a hardened steel so it should not mushroom too bad.. a soft bolt?? may or may not.. but go by the proper tool and you will be fine..

DO NOT USE A 3 ARM PULLER...
