tire issues

Quick question,might be stupid but figured id give it a shot. I ran over a nail ..flat tire etc. I have spoked rims so I just changed out the tube should I have plugged the tire as well? I took the nail out. What will happen if I don't plug the tire if I needed to? As always you guys are awesome thanks for the info in advance.

I would at least put a patch in the tire then balance the tire. If it was a huge nail then a plug.
