I recently had my nephew work on my 78 XS400. He replaced the battery, I think from Walmart. Until my Modder modified the stock seat I had no idea the battery was too tall for the bike and the seat sits on the battery rather than the frame. Trouble is, I can't find a battery to fit the bike. All the internet sites I've checked begin with the 80 model year. Even my local Yamaha dealer can't find one. As you know, the battery can only be 4 1/2' to 5" tall or so. Thought I finally had one at my NAPA dealer today but it's about 5/16 too wide. Also, the shorter batteries are around 6 amp where the taller ones are 12. I assume the 6 amp is adequate for electric start because the stock battery was short. I'm about to just try to lower the existing box since I've eliminated the stock air box anyway. Any ideas?

try a gel tech battery, they may be smaller where it counts!

maybe use 2 x 6 volters in parallel (or is it series?)

batterymart.com has a ton of options too at fair prices and they ship em charged unless you get an acid cell.
