I have a 77' xs360. My bike is kick start only. I want to do something similar to this build

http://www.xs400.com/forum/showthread.php?t=12475

but i noticed on the ebay link for the battery it says "Please note if you use older classic bikes from mid 1980s and earlier you should update the charging systems to a modern voltage regulator, damaged voltage regulator can overcharge the battery and damage it"
Is this a real concern? Would that mean i would have to replace the strator? Im VERY green when it comes to the electronics side.

Thank you for any help

I know with some of these type batteries you have to be careful how you charge them and how many volts your bike puts out. Some can't take high amp chargers. Maybe google the battery and see what others have said.

Some of the older bikes use a mechanical regulator. These can be adjusted for output.
If you doo a lot of around town low speed riding then you adjust it up a bit. Only thing is that if you get it out on the road and cruise at high speeds the regulator can over charge the battery.
Adjust the reg to not over charge at highway speeds and it under charges at low speeds.
The more modern solid state versions have fixed this problem. The later xs400 uses a solid state reg or you can adapt a car regulator in place of your old mechanical unit.
