Seems like replacement is a no-brainer but the PO must have been running the bike for some time with it in this condition:

Discovered it while cleaning the engine in preparation for a full rebuild. Decent replacements on Ebay aren't too cheap.
Would I be asking for trouble putting it back on a rebuilt engine or can it be used until I buy a replacement?

yeah, these cover are quite pricey...
My bike came with two cracked holes...There was always small drip of oil under the alternator cover. But not a big issue. You have to check the oil level.
My cover was rewelded with new material before painting. New holes were drilled and the rest of the material was machined.

There is no or very little oil pressure behind that cover. You could try to j-b weld the crack. Just don't put the bolt on too tight. Those bolts should only be 7-8lbs of torque.

Thanks guys. I'll keep an eye out for options. Going to check out a local motorcycle salvage shop just in case they have something.

Just noticed matching hairline cracks on the opposite side too.

If it had been working previously you could likely just re-use it, even with 2 cracks, especially on the sides. Like xschris said, there is next to no oil pressure in there. Of course, fixing it would be best.

If it starts to drip you could try a new gasket.

If you are doing a full re-build you might as well replace it. The price won't be a huge hit in the grand scheme.
