1982 Yamaha Maxim Xs400 J? so much confusion.

Find a frame with good papers and just use your parts.
This is my recommendation as well. A titled frame will probably run you $150 or so. That seems like a lot, but obtaining a title in other ways could run you more than that.

I'm sure someone will recommend the Vermont loophole, but that doesn't work anymore. It's only available to those who live in Vermont. It would probably be easier to go through the process of claiming it as a abandoned vehicle.

Unrelated note, my bike is indeed a 5 speed
 
I got the bike for the privilege of removing it from its location so the initial cost was worth it. It has been a fun thing for me to clean it up and hopefully grt it running. It was in pretty.good shape except.for the seat which I am having recovered.
Did you ever get your bike running? I’m a geezer too and recently bought an old Maxim 400 to get it running again.
 
Mine is a 5 speed. 1982 Yamaha Maxim 400J. My VIN number starts with 15G but I notice some parts have the prefix 12R
