I've got an xs400j. I can't find the right forks for this bike. i ordered some 82 xs400 forks but they are slightly smaller diameter and the fender and brake doesn't match up. Looking online looks like i need forks from a maxim 400. Problem is there's very little of the online and what is there is nasty stuff. So my question is

Are there other forks from other bikes that i can use?

I think XJ550, the whole front end should fit on there. seen it on the www.xs400.net site

shop eBay, might have to be patient. found a pair for the XS400J for $90+20 s+h, looked scabby. . overpriced and you only need the stantions anyway.

Make sure of the part # for your exact bike, maybe there's a parts catalog (diagrams and part numbers) in one of the stickys in this forum.

You might have the fork inners for the SJ. . . Different than for your bike. The part # for your bike is same on the following XS'

Fortunately he has a "make offer" and knows noone will pay that much. So I would contact seller saying only need stantions (he can choose to send only those, ha) and maybe offer low $40 (+20 s+h), then see if offer is accepted. Strangely in the pics, they don't look straight, I think that might be the pictures, but make sure to contact seller about that as well.

I posted too fast, sounds like you need more than just the sliders.
If not a parts catalog for exact part number you can go to different sites for example. .

Get the part number (and price - if available).

For the entire assembly looks like part 16M-23103 for right fork. Can also copy / paste the number in search engine. Or seperately for sliders and outers, etc. Easier than ending up with the wrong part at least.

anyone know replacement for xs400 1978 ? reliable fork as the bike is hardtailed, maybee from enduro or something, little overstock ?
