I've been looking around on offerup trying to find a cheap cruiser to replace my old tired yam (83 XS400K maxim) and I found one that claims to be an "850cc maxim" and the best part is the guy is willing to trade bikes sight unseen because he needs cash ASAP. the only 'problem' I have is that from what I can tell, yamaha never made an 850 inline 4....

I assume I'm actually looking at an XS1100 and that just sweetens the deal, but I'm desperate to know the EXACT year and model so i know what I'm looking at. I asked the guy for the VIN but he gave me some weird 9 digit code that he found on both the fork AND the engine and this is it; 4h7-009793

Does that look like a VIN to anybody else? I don't know what that number is but I know I have one like it on the motor of my XS400K so it has to mean something.

I'm including pics of the mystery bike from the listing.

Any help would be greatly appreciated thanks!

The number is a VIN. That's the number Yamaha stamps on the neck of the frame and the engine case. They also put on a white sticker with a longer VIN. This longer VIN has the 9 digit VIN incorporated into it.
They started using the long VIN somewhere in the early 80's. My 75 uses the 9 Digit VIN. The 81 that uses the 9 digit VIN. The 83 uses the 17 digit VIN.

It could be a 650 or a 750 from what I can tell.

Thanks so much! based on the info from the first result that bike is a 1980 XJ650 Maxim USA! She's older than my '83 XS400K but she's probably in better shape! Plus there's no replacement for displacement!
