very simple question, but as I am a new motorcycle and xs400 owner, I need help. Just curious as the proper way to start from cold start, when xs400 won't start from just hitting start and giving it some throttle. Turn it to prime? choke position? what order...? I would just like an order to go in, so I'm not guessing with mixed results...

thanks
Steve

Key on, Petcock in run position, transmission in neutral, starter valve (aka choke) on, pull clutch (electric start only!), kill switch to run, start (kick or electric). Do NOT apply throttle. Adjust starter valve (choke) to keep RPM around 1500 to 2000 for about 1 min, or the time it take to put helmet and gloves on. Ride away gently and starter valve (choke) off. Continue to ride gently for 10 minutes or so until oil is warmed up, side covers hot to touch. Then have fun.
