kickstarter adjustment help required

Kickstarter on my 80 xs400sg only seems to engage at the last two inches of stroke. Adjusted the clutch. No change. Springs right back up I kick again same thing. No engagement until the last two inches of kick. Any ideas / help would be appreciated.

did you check the pawl and took out the shaft to check that the rear support webbing in the crank is still intact?

Nope. Didn't know tthey came with "webbing"

First, when you say you adjusted the clutch, could you describe exactly what you did?


Second, regarding 'webbing' and kicker shaft, I think you are looking to see if it looks like this:

Pehaps I should speak more precisely. I adjusted the cluth cable. Took almost all the slop out of it. Set it to have about 3/16" of freeplay. No change. I could dc the cable and I get the same feedback from my kickstarter.

Adjust the clutch at the sprocket cover. May not make a difference, but it may.
