If you go with pods get uni's they will work better than any pleated filter out there.

Yes you will have to rejet search the guide to jetting on the forum and it will give you a guide to follow.
Anytime you change the airflow into your carbs you have compensate by allowing more fuel to flow through your main jets.
Just adjusting the fuel mix screws wont help.

Faze- pod if you want to. Its not required. I am currently running very free flowing exhaust (emgo shorties) and stock intake. I had to rejet after that change.
I an planning to uni pod as Chris suggested when my air filters need replacement. From the forum evidence I've gathered, most people who have my pipes and uni pods, they are using my same jetting but with idle mixture screwed out more than mine... So depending on your current jetting, you may be fine adjusting idle mixture, you may not be. Changing jets is easy, and you will probably have to do it one it twice "just to make sure" when you Get your pods going. I know I will, even though others on the forum are already using my jetting for what I hope to achieve (always better to make sure in my opinion)

I am not set on switching to pods, just seeing if it makes sense (also if it fits in with my design scheme for the bike). I really don't know jack about carbs (beyond watching a couple of youtube videos and reading on the forum), though I've built fuel injection computers before. Maybe an EFI swap would be the thing?

You will learn a surprising amount about carbs if you want to, just by trouble shooting these ones. Just about every motorcycle forum has a true carb guru who loves to type descriptive write ups. These are fairly simple things that have a basic set of principles that need to be applied, but once you get one type of carb you can more or less get then all.

I was kidding about the EFI. Going with the pods and re-jetting the carbs is the way to go. I envision the end result of my build to be a mild resto/tracker. Kind of tempted to go with knobby tires actually. I really like the bikes that blend that look. Have you guys seen the Bolt build off champion bike? That is the hotness.

I really want to get started on this bike, but I am not doing a thing until I can clean it up and this stupid cold weather is making that impossible! Can't wait for spring!

Took advantage of the 40°F weather and did a little wrenching on the bike today after work. The original owner had installed a windshield and a funky seat with a back rest, so I removed the mounting bracket for the windshield, and the rails for the back rest. It now looks like a normal XS400, and that's a good thing!
I was curious what this rubber strap is supposed to go to? Can anyone tell me? When I opened the seat, it was just chilling there not attached to anything.
Next step is for it to warm the heck up so I can wash the bike. I have a feeling it is actually in decent shape relatively under all the dust.

My guess would be that it should either support the seat or the fuel tank onto the frame, sort of a 'bumper'. But I have a DOHC so I don't know for sure
That rubber part goes under the gas tank just ahead of the mounting bolt.

xschris said it right. Clean it up good with some soap and water, dry, then coat it with Amor-All and you are ready to go...Undo the tank bolt, raise the tank and it just slips in... Spad

The parts are starting to trickle in: the rear tire (Shinko 244 in 3.50x18), the rear brake light and license plate mount, and the new handlebars all showed up today. The handlebars are Biltwell street trackers in black. I finished removing the rear turn signals today, which you can see are gone in the pic. I need to run a few tests before I tear it down further. Still lots of parts to order, including a steering head bearing. Hope that's not too big of a pain.
The new tail light is going to need a bracket fabricated, and I need to figure out how i am going to mount my seat. Lots of fun issues to resolve.

I have a Shinko 244 4.10x18 tire with 100 miles on it...its smaller than the 3.50x18 for some reason. Let me know if you would like it. I'm excited to see how your build goes!

Thanks, but I ordered a front and a rear, so I am good for now. I wanted to do a brat tracker, but I think it's going to be a bRat Tracker... more rat than brat.

Pulled the old handlebars off. I used some WD-40 and a thin screwdriver to pry the grips off, after reading about the technique on this forum. I will wait to test fit the new bars...

Test fit a turn signal last night. I am using the holes in the frame loop (the flat piece that goes up for the fender to mount to, and the seat went over), and they were a little small, so I busted out the drill and opened one up a bit. Looks awesome!
Also, mocked up a template out of cardboard for the bracket I need to fabricate for the tail light/plate assembly. I think this will workout well!

No, funny-ish story though. The bike had an aftermarket seat with a back rest on it, when I got it. I tore that crap off and put it in the garbage pile, but my uncle pulled the backrest out of the junk and set it on the frame one day, just to sit on it, and the lightbulb went off! Perfect! It's a bit too soft in the padding, but I dig the style, and it fits the semi rat style I am going with.
I don't believe so. When I was shopping on eBay, I purposely tried to avoid that. I might be wrong.
