Maybe if you have a points ignition. But for a electronic one you need at least a 7ah battery. That is what I use on my xs650. Unless you are running a permanent magnet alternator.

I have an 81 XS400 Special II... I think that its electronic... yes/no??

yes, electronic ignition. I think they switched to EI on the 1980 + models

I have a 82 xs400 4g5.
I'm currently running a 3ah battery. Works fine, and have so all summer. (over 2500 miles)

Well I am gonna say WTH and just buy one... its 14 bucks... if it doesnt work... i will find a use for it... =)

I got a 3.2 amp with aftermarket ignition (when its finished) can'r envisage a problem. no running lights, LED rear lamps and 45 watt headlamp!

I picked up a 12v 5ah SLA... Works like a charm!!
