Speedometer needs help.... 82 maxim

My speedometer does not work or move. However, when I disconnected the cable at the front wheel and spin it in my fingers, the dial does react. The cable does does not seem to bind anywhere... So I don't think it is the cable.

I guess l'll wait for my service manual to arrive so I can figure out how the dial's case comes off.

it might be the "gear assembly unit" (#13 here -->http://www.boats.net/parts/search/Yamaha/Motorcycle/1982/XS400J/FRONT WHEEL/parts.html) Since it reacts when you spin the cable with your fingers, it probably isn't the speedo. Reattach the cable to the wheel, disconnect the cable from the console and spin the wheel. If the cable doesn't move, it's probably the part I mentioned.
