I thought I knew everything about the xs and how wrong could I have been!

just seen this on www.xs400.net

Upper engine mount at 2A2 and 4G5

Improper installation of the upper engine mount leads to bad vibrations, which are not only unpleasant to fingers and buttocks, but also lead to defects in the machine.

So here are some pictures of how the engine is mounted correctly under the tank.

This means that the plate of the rubber sleeve goes on the side of the engine, the longer piece of pipe to the outside. The engine is then between the two plates of rubber blocks.

The rubber Blocks can be purchased separately.

just checked mine, and they are incorrectly fitted

I'll have to check mine out today; I put them back on the way I found them, but this is interesting.

I just finished an engine swap between two bikes. They were both in the correct way and that's how I reinstalled them. I am just glad I made note of how they were oriented before I pulled them out. They are a little counterintuitive unless you saw how they were originally installed.
