So i am working on a 1982 XS400 Heritage Special, I want to know if an XS650 swingarm is longer, allow a bigger tire, and if it will bolt up to the 400 frame. The rear wheel i am looking at using is a 17in with a 130 90 17 tire, Vs the 120 90 16 and stock 16in wheel that is on it now.

I don't think much of anything from the 650 bolts up without modification.

There are two swing-arms that I know of for the xs400. The later models (80 or 81) have a slightly bigger rear tire. I am not even sure these will just interchange without any modification. I have both of these in my garage, but the earlier one is on my bike! You already have the larger one anyway.

The only changes to swing arms I've seen so far seemed to require some modifications.

I think there was a thread some time ago with photos of all of the swing arms next to each other for comparison.

You can't go much larger anyway without hitting your chain or pushing it off center.

Running custom wheels may not be an option if you can't do any modifications, but you can up size your stock rear tire a bit.
