In near future, I will have to replace the oil filter on my 1982 XS400 12E (DOHC).The filter(Yamaha no:1L9-13440-91/Filtrex OIF016/07A21 has a recess at one end(marked FRONT) Last time i changed it, I installed it wit this end up. This was how the old one was mounted and also seemed to be correct according to the YAMAHA parts catalogue 1212E-361E1 page B9. However, In the YAMAHA Owners Manual 12E28199-80, page 105, the Filter seems to be shown mounted in the opposite way. Does anyone have a qualified opinion on what is right and what is wrong? I tried posting this on Facebook but didnt get the response that I was hoping for, preferably from someone having experience on maintaining the DOHC engines.

Yes flip it. Not sure on the dohc bikes but the sohc setup has a thin washer between the filter and the spring. I'm not even sure you have a spring for the dohc bikes. Maybe someone that has one will chime in.
