my new project/ first bike/81 xs400h

The new tank looks great; huge improvement. I am sure you're busy today and it is very nice out! The thing about doing this kind of work is that you're probably the only one that notices the imperfections. I really can't see anything at all even having been prompted.

Thanks all :)

It definently has some imperfections, painted it in a high build grey today and ill sand it with some 600 soon, definently needed to paint it tho I need to start mocking up stuff for permanentt

Made a rear tank mount that keeps the tank about 1.5inch off the frame and some bump stops for gixer tripple trees so that they don't hit the tank.

Electrical this week........just waiting for the sprocket :/

hey skillz...

any advice on shooting regular rustoleum paint?

ive got 2 quarts of red that I want to use on the frame and tank, should I dilute it at all? (im going to spray it out of a decent gun)

what about clear? I think it will look good without clear but would it be good to do a gas-resistant clear on the tank?

got the lights in today, came out pretty good IMO

to dent or not to dent? I think it will look killer if I get it correct... but its a PITA if I mess it up

tires will be ordered friday (no money)

gona work to get the pegs mounted this weekend as well....should make loootttttsss of progress this weekend

gettin there...

The way that I saw Skilzman demonstrate his "skilz",if you are careful, you shouldn't have a problem,if you go slowly.Having said that, one man's tap is anothers' pound. At one time I was a Farrier[horseshoer],and I developed a control of a hammer, and anvil.I sold all of my working tools and 125 lb anvil, but bought a 40 lb anvil, and a set of 3 shop hammers[ball peen].They're good for straightening pcs of metal.Get an old tank at a wrecking yard and practice, and you'll be more comfortable peening your own. lha:bike:

Iha, yep I practiced on a honda tank, then went and beat mine last week, did body work and painted it this weekend, page before this one I posted pics :)

thanks guys, yeah thats a mog in the background, started as a customer project, 2 bent rods...he didnt want to pay, we bought it...now its our plow/offroad beast...real fun truck.

drewps, its definently and interesting setup. im starting to think the angle of the rocker link compared to the dogbone (adjustable link) is really important compared to ride quality. when I had the dogbone links longer the rear end was really stiff, now its more like it should be....but im hoping its not TOO soft.... we shall see i guess, there is the preload on the spring to play with and dampner adjustment

in truth im more worried about the front end, both fork seals are pretty leaky...ive got no experience with the guts of shocks so it will be quite interesting when i have to replace them

You'll do fine; what you're doing looks far more complicated than any of the fork jobs I have seen. There seem to be a lot of videos on how to change fork seals on youtube with nothing skipped. Watch a few of those for confidence first and I bet you have no trouble.

never sprayed rustoleum thru a gun...the directions on the back should tell you what you should thin it with...you want it pretty thin for a cup gun...as far as the clear...good question I would ask a body supply shop what you can/if you can put a urethane clear over the rustoleum.
You want to use a urethane clear for gas resistance....lacquer clear will get destroyed.
truthfully for the best results its best to stick with one paint line/brand and I would recommend using a base/clear system....cross mixing products has always given me headaches...sometimes you get away with it...but usually only when it doesnt matter.

yeah, I get ya, just dont feel like spending big dough... but why stop now???

BC, ive joined both the Gixxer forum and a honda forum now, they dont seem to want to share info, guess I will have to utube it

gona go back down today and try and rehash my rear set idea. the biggest this stopping me is that the rear brake hose to the master cyl is quite short...so I have to have the pegs back from the frame about a half of a foot....not bad for clearance with the kicker but I hate to stick some ugly bracket way off the frame

hate to keep bugging this guy who is making my sprocket...but last week he was going to have it done...and same with the week before that....im running out of time :(

I know how you feel, I'm still waiting for my spacer for the front disk :(

you can get most colors in Shopline...which is a division of PPG for around $35-$45 a qt...and you can buy qts of clear..the Shopline clear is around $115 for a gallon..not sure about the qt's.....but you should be able to get the stuff you need for $75 or so for everything...if you tell the shop its a one time deal..they will usually pour you off some reducer for the paint.

yeah drewps, not mad, not agrivated but im running out of time.

skills, ill probably do that, no clue when im gona paint the bike at this point but I know the guys at my local paint shop so they will probably cut me a deal

got me some rubbers today !!!:wink2:

took me no time to mount em'

got the rear sets on too, I decided to use the adjustable brackets provided I didnt want to at first but it was the easiest route, kicker just clears the brake lever, ill probably get ashorter one just in case

check iiittttt OOOOWWWWWtttttttt

That looks sweet. You just have the rear set frame brackets "mocked up" for now, or are they finished? I'm sure you're going to "clean" them up a bit, correct? The whole thing looks fast as hell with the new tires for some reason! haha Good job man!

Thanks HT, yeah both the brackets and the rear sets will get cleaned up, new hardware and all, I left that bit of edgy bracket on there because it started to rain

You think ill need a chain tensioner?
