Mine is also an '82 XS400J Maxim. It is a good little bike, save from the problems.

I, too, have the same problem. I noticed that my right exhaust pipe is blue and the left seems to be normal.

Drewpy, huh? What is the deflection?? No I loosened up the axle nut and put the cotter pin back in. What adjusters on either side? I am really not stupid, just extraordinarily confused.

Ok so I found out that my chain was loose 2 days ago. I tightened it up and now it sounds like it is rubbing. I don't think that either the chain or the nut on the axle is too tight, so it may be the chain needing oil. What do you think?

That isn't your only problem. You are probably off riding it right now, I'm late as can be. It sounds like possible timing/ syncing problems.

Smell the oil. Does it smell like gas at all?? If it does smell like gas, change the oil. That should keep it running for a while. Use diesel oil. If this is all the case, you may have a leaky petcock. Btw, welcome to the forums. This place is great to answer a lot of your questions and to...

I agree with thlillyr, although I have a question as well. How do we rejet the main jets? Can we do them on the bike? Do we have to tear things apart to get to them?
