Hi, I'm swapping out my tach ( the one currently in the cluster seems to bounce around a bit ) . on my 1982 xs 400 maxim

I'm having trouble taking off the tripometer reset dial......is there a secret to this or is it brute strength and a little ignorance and pulling on it until it gives ?
I've tried that for a bit and also checked to see if there is a screw holding it in the middle of the dial....to no avail.
Any ideas ?

Have you removed the screw on that trip odometer reset knob? Mine has one, in the center of the knob. Once I removed the screw, the knob slid off with little to no effort. If the screw is not there, you may be dealing with the previous owners maintenance skills...

For what it is worth, it is a Japanese bike. Brute force and Ignorance should be left in the parking lot of the Harley dealership. Try to think precise, exact, elegant, consistent, and reliable. My tach just started bouncing again, so it is time to lubricate the cable again.

Creemore? I find myself there a couple times a year for lunch. Usually covered in mud after riding sections of the Bruce and other places I probably shouldn't be ;)

Thanks...and that's why I thought I would ask...I'll leave the brute strength to the Harley dealers...haha.
I tried to find a screw in the middle but it May be smaller than the one I have.
I'm hoping it's a Phillips but I couldn't tell when I tried gently with the one I have.
Thanks for your help

Yea, Great little town here... lots of nice roads in the area to ride as well..
In your opinion, what's the best way and type of lubricant to lube the cables ?
Thanks

The screw will be a JIS, but a Phillips may work. I'm not certain, but I think I remember it being a #1. Small. The screw may be rusty. A dental pick is handy for cleaning out the slots to allow the screw driver to fit properly.

I use a synthetic grease on the Tach and Speedo cables. Any grease will be better than nothing. Disconnect the cable from the cluster and remove the core from the sheath. Clean, grease, and reinstall.
