    Some charging numbers

WAIT. It appears that the R-292 will not work with a 1980. I've read conflicting information. Anyone know a suitable plug and play solution? Best, Adam

    Some charging numbers

Agreed. I just connected the black wire coming from the field coil directly to the + terminal of the battery and while the bike was running and the voltage across the battery immediately shot up. I'm going to pick up an R-292 generic voltage regulator tomorrow from the local auto parts...

    Some charging numbers

New information. I put my ammeter in series with the green wire which connects the field coil to the voltage regulator and no current is flowing with the key on. I then disconnected ONLY the green wire and connected it to the battery to see if I could feela magnetic field near the stator...

    Some charging numbers

Hey everyone, Bike not charging. I have some numbers hopefully someone can give me an opinion one. I've read through most of the other postings on this topic and haven't encountered this situation. The resistance between the 3 white wires is 0.9 ohms. (slightly out of...

    Confused on reg/rec

Even better question, which years of rectifier will fit my 1980?

How many wires come out of the rectifier? Best, Adam

    Confused on reg/rec

Hey everyone, I have a 1980 XS400. I did a barebones re-wire. Everything is complete besides the alternator system. I am super confused here, though. Does a 1980 have a combined regulator and rectifier? If so, how many wires should be coming out of it? Also, what is this guy...

    Wires coming from alternator

Hey everyone, This is for a 1980 Standard. I have 2 sets of wires coming from my alternator. The first set is on a male connector and the second set is on a female connector. One has 3 wires and the other has 4 wires. What are the purpose of these wires. I suppose one set goes to the...

    Checking for oil flow

Hey everyone, Went to adjust the valves today. The bike is vertical on a jack (no centerstand) and oil poured out of the alternator cover as I removed it. I was under the impression that oil would not come out. Whats the deal? Should I just lean the bike on its side a bit to adjust the...

    Checking for oil flow

Great points BCware, I'm confident the noise I am hearing is not normal. I've worked on other XS400s in the past so I'm familiar with what a 'normal' is. If I can find the means, I'll post a youtube video. Let me first check the valve clearances and if the noise persists I'll re-check...

    Checking for oil flow

Yes, valves are adjusted. Before I do anything major I am going to adjust them again. And yes, by 'big nut' I mean the valve inspection nuts. I only did a top end rebuild, so I doubt I messed anything up in regards to the oil pump or passageways. I'll adjust the valves sometime this...

    Checking for oil flow

Hey everyone, I have a barebones build with no OSU, so I can't check for oil pressure. On my 1980 XS400 if I remove one of the big nuts covering the rocker arms should oil be splashing around when the bike is running? My top end is really really noisy after a rebuild and I'm trying to...

    Installing Emgo shorty mufflers

On my XS650 there is a vent hole at the top of the exhaust header (near the engine fins). This is to allow for condensation to escape as the exhaust heats up. Do 400 pipes have this same hole? If they do then the exhaust gas moving in the void will travel through that hole. Best, Adam

    Installing Emgo shorty mufflers

Hey guys, Gonna buy emgo shorty mufflers and attach them to my stock headers. These pipes are dual walled and I know the exhaust only flows through the inner pipe. My understanding is that the emgo simply attaches to the outer wall. How do I ensure that exhaust flow continues from...

    Air filter swapping

Hey everyone, Can I use a stock air filter off of a xs650 for the xs400? They look pretty similar but I am out of town and cannot check for sure. Adam

    Exhaust swapping

Hey everyone, Whats the deal with using exhausts from different years. If I have a 1980 Special will other exhaust years fit? What about a 1980 Standard? Adam

    First Time Bike Rebuild: Thoughts?

xschris, why must the rockerbox and head match? If they came from the same type of engine why does it matter? Assuming they don't match and you put it back together, what happens? Adam

Make Offer - Almost Complete 1980 XS400 Part Out

How much for the cylinder block+pistons and the complete head to 30305. Also, can you post some picks of their condition. Also, any history on the bike. Did it run before the part-out began?
