    Regulator Issues

Okay quick update, so it turns out that my regulator is putting positive charge to my green wire. Checking from the field coil connector I am getting roughly 9.5 Volts DC when I measure from the green wire to a ground. I am getting about 10.5 Volts DC when I measure from the brown wire to...

    Regulator Issues

So I just finished a small rewire on my XS400, lengthened some wires and shortened others up to help them fit my cafe/brat seat. Just finished connecting all of my new terminals and plugging everything in and what do you know, it isn't charging. I am running a brand new R292 regulator for the...

    Custom Rewind Stator

Okay, I'll give the old one a test. I'll probably end up doing a rewire for the old beast this winter anyway; my fuse "box" is pretty sketch and might as well take care of as much as I can while I'm not riding for a couple months. If the rectifier is pooped I'll be doing my homework to see what...

    Custom Rewind Stator

Okay, so it looks like that will work for me after all. Any suggestions with a rectifier? I see a lot of used ones on ebay but with the amount of problems people have with XS400 charging systems I'm kinda weary of that route. Are there any other good (cheap) alternatives for a new rectifier?

    Custom Rewind Stator

Okay, so just got the new rec/reg in tonight and it looks like its a piece of junk. I tested the rectifier side of things and right out of the box it failed the diode test. With that in mind it looks like I'm onto finding something else that will work  Arfstorm, I see you have your...

    Custom Rewind Stator

Okay, just got my rec/reg ordered. It's a one piece unit from www.regulatorrectifier.com This one is probably best because my unit isn't body ground and just having one "box" to hide will make it easier. I'll let you guy's know as soon as I get the new piece hooked up.

    Custom Rewind Stator

Sounds like a bad regulator in that case, is there any way to test those directly or should I just go ahead and grab a new one?

    Custom Rewind Stator

I gave that wiring test a try, getting no resistance for both green and black wires from the field coil connector to the VR connector. I did find something interesting though, while I was playing around with the multimeter I noticed that both wires are body-grounded. I was getting a little less...

    Custom Rewind Stator

Okay, its been a while and I've done some work. I've redone my wireing to my field coil and stator and decided to give it a couple tests. I'm getting the usual 4 ohms resistance for my field coil and 0.8 ohms on all legs of the stator. What didn't do too hot is when I tried the razor blade...

    Custom Rewind Stator

Well I switched my wires leading off of my field coil and when the bike was turned on (not running) she seemed to be all right. There were no blown fuses like I had before when I tried turning it on. Now before I sent my field coil to the guys at custom rewind it was doin just fine, 4 ohms of...

    Custom Rewind Stator

Okay, I'll see if I can try switching those wires tonight, busy with work as always. But arfstorm I think you and I are thinking different things when I say turned on the bike. I meant I just flipped the key to "ON" without getting the engine started. I don't think having the rectifier regulator...

    Custom Rewind Stator

Hey, just got my stator rewound by the guys over at Custom Rewind, looks like a very professional job and the guys were really helpful and quick with the job. All in all the charge came to 100$. The custom rewind guy's seperated my stator and field coil too which didn't seem like that big...

    Charging System Issues

Definitely a SOHC. But it looks like my rectifier regulator has gone from 30$ to 500$... WTF I see a couple of different options online. Does anyone recommend any in particular?

I think I have a SOHC... not exactly sure

    Charging System Issues

Well that sucks, I've heard of a couple of different ways to (in theory) fix this. I've heard of a custom rewind site and a permanent magnet charging system swap. I have looked into the Custom Rewind guys and they look pretty good but I'm wondering about this permanent magnet swap. Does anybody...

    Charging System Issues

Yeah, going straight from the stator I get a single volt AC from the stator using all three white wires, and thats at 5000 rpm. I have heard that it is "supposed" to read 75 VAC on all three wires. So it looks like I have 74 volts to find

    Charging System Issues

So about a week ago I was having trouble with my charging system not getting any power (whatsoever) to my battery. I checked the continuity on all of my white stator wires and found that one wire wasn't getting continuity with the other two. I took off the left side/sprocket cover off and found...

    Rectifier Swap

So I was riding on my bike's longest ride to date and she died while on the highway. Thankfully I had a buddy of mine following because the reason she died is that my rectifier had flew off :yikes: (long story ), but he found it on the side of the road :D. When it did fly off it ripped the...

    XS400 Brat: First Project

Haven't been on for a while but I've come quite a ways on the project. Past what you see there, I still have some work to do with the electrical I have hooked under the seat. I am also going to switch from the current (larger) guages to some Dime city pieces that lay flat. I am also going...

    Idle too Damn High

So finally got my bike up and running and after riding it around for a while I noticed that when I come to a stop it likes to idle at around 2500-3000 rpm. I would adjust the idle screw but then she wouldn't idle at startup (to which she sits at a nice 800-1000 rpm). Should I adjust the idle...
