I would bet it is a 78 because on the right hand control just under the kill switch there is a lights on off switch

That's a good catch and you are right. Since '79, the XS400 headlights have been "automatic on" as were most motorcycles sold in the U.S.

I just bought that very same bike last weekend for my gf. Same everything except a better stock seat. Her bike is a 78
