I just rewired my 81 400! Everything seems to be wired right! I have been through it three or four times just to double check! Only thing I had to fix was the rectifier! Ran it to the bat instead of fuse box! No my problem is that the bike will not stay running if it is hooked up to a vehicle with a good bat or running motor? Thinking that it may be a bad battery now??? Any other thoughts just in case??

Take battery to a dealership/repair/auto place and have it tested for it's AMPS, not it's volts. They'll do a load test, usually for free.

Try disconnecting the rectifier altogether: if it was reversed that could be enough to kill the power on one of our small batteries. Worth a shot if it could save you the $50 on a new battery.
