I have an 82 xs400 maxim that i have recently picked up and im doing some resto work on it. I have a question pertaining to the forks, are there any replacements for the forks? I have one fork in great condition( the right one), seems to have been replaced when new OEM replacements could be purchased, but the other is pitted very badly and doesnt extend as far as the other. I removed the surface rust with steel wool but the seal wont last too long with the pitting. Any suggestions for a next step?

have a look on ebay, or mikesxs.net. But if I were you, I'd just try to smooth out the pitting as best as possible

Or go fork swap! USD forks! Search on here for "Aprilia forks" and wonder at how awesome USD forks can look.

There is a ton of info on the web about fork swaps with forks from other bikes. You have to make sure you find the right donor, and sometimes there are some parts you have to make (or have made) but the possibilities are endless.
