Help! Rear brake pedal return sprin

On the home stretch to my hardtailed 1979 xs400
I have drum brakes and am trying to get the brake pedal spring on and am losing my mind.
It has been hardtailed Here's a pic. Help!

I could be totally wrong but I don't think my rear drum has a spring in that location.
Might want to double check the parts diagram.
 
It goes on the inside.

For what its worth, I took mine off and didn't reuse it. The drum springs work plenty well.

Don't forget to add a brake stop bolt on the frame there in that picture you posted. It is adjustable on the frame and the flat part on that silver bracket rests on it.
 
Curious though, it looks like you are using the stock brake arm. My rearsets weigh practically nothing, so I have no issues without that spring. But that stock part might be too heavy to not use it.
 
The longer flange should be facing to the inside on your first posted pic. I think you can still work something out though
 
Thanks, i discovered it was welded on backwards. Learn something new everyday. HA
I cut it down a bit so it fit through and could mount the pedal on proper, and managed to work the spring and its returning right I believe.
