i have an 80's yamaha xs400s bobber and the kick start on it is really hard to use. is there anything i can do to make the kick start easier and less of a struggle?

What exactly do you mean by "hard to use?" Does your bike run well? and does the electric start work ?

If you fail to kick it entirely to where the spring recoils back you can get a pressure build up and the next kick will be significantly harder to kick over.

If you think about what a kick starter actually has to do, its difficulty may stem from from either kickstarter gears themselves, or the actual engine trying to turn over. Turning over an engine so that it can start is tough, which is exactly why they invented an electric starter haha

Just make sure your engine is in tip top shape, and you have good oil in all the right places and thats about as easy as you are gonna get...

to make it easier to start, open chicke out fully, no gas on the throttle. one prod to get the juice going and then swing it baby!
