does anyone know of any online owner manuals as I have purchased a 1982 xs400 and some things are worn on the bike like the fuel valve I don't know where the valve should be kept turned too on the bike for on off and reserve tank

The petcock has an ON, RES and PRI setting. They are pressed into the petcock, and there is a little arrow on the switch itself. I had a hard time seeing them at first as well, but they are likely still on there. The ON and RES positions shut off the fuel flow when the engine is not running, and allow flow when the engine is turning. The PRI setting simply opens the fuel flow, but shouldn't always be used as it can cause carb flooding and fuel leaks. Better to keep it on ON.

Thanks the carb bit is my next project on the bike i already found the service manual but was hoping there was the owners manual
I don't think we have those here, but you couldn't find it on google?
