can't find a clear answer using the search bar or google.

what would cause an engine to not fully engage neutral during a drive?

shift to neutral at a stop light. green light comes on letting you know you're in neutral, let out the clutch thinking you're in neutral. Bike bumps forward and stalls. Then wiggle the shifter up or down a little to get back into neutral properly.

happens occasionally, also used to happen with my old sr185

The shift drum/forks in the trans might be worn out and not full lining up correct. These are 30+ year old bikes stuff will wear out:( You can check to neutral switch on the engine and see if it is worn also the sensor might be loose.
