I just purchased a 1977 XS360 that I plan on converting to a cafe racer. I was going to make a seat/tail section out of fiberglass until I thought of taking the original seat and ripping off all the foam and upholstery until only the bare metal seat pan remained then building my seat off of that. I plan on cutting a bit of the back of the frame up and removing the fender and taillights for more of a cafe look. If I chopped the frame I would also have to cut the seat pan as well. Has anyone here every tried anything like this and do you think it would work and be able to be made into a cafe seat?

yes! it works well and is a guaranteed fit on your bike. I had mine done by a friend of mine and it turned out to look fantastic

Here is a seat that I had done for me using the original pan. It cost less money using your own seat pan and of course you get a perfect fit. Also you can design the hump any way you want. You could make it solo if you like.
