Hi there fellow bikers,I need a little help if possible from you buff's.Ijust bought a bike thats supposed to be a 1979/80 xs400 special been searching for a vin no.but cant find it.
The engine and frame have the same no. 2L0-072351 can the bike be identified from that?I want to restore it to factory specs so I really need to know what I have. The only other thing I can tell you are it has mag wheels, disc brakes front and back, black frame ,red tank and side covers, right hand side cover has a large S on it and ape hangers.Oh theres also no kickstart(electric start only)and it has a points system

If the build date on the neck tag is 78 then it's a 79-F post some pics of the bike. Sounds like it is missing a few parts.

Try clicking on "Go Advance" (below) and then use the paper-clip icon. On this Forum there is an extra step compared to attaching a photo to, say, an email.

First select your file's name, then click open on the search window, then, when it flips back to the "Manage Attachments" window, you have to click "Upload".

Tnx a lot hope these help

The build date will tell you the correct year. But it looks like someone removed the kick start from it. That is not factory.

I thought as much havent seen any bike without a kickstart.Looks like I have a lot of work to do,already searching locally,so far no luck may have to import from the USA or with luck Japan

2L0-072351 looks like win and it should tell you everything about model, you will need to do some searching. When I was doing same search for my bike I saw that some models were without kick-start, so it appears you got one of those models.

Looks like a nice bike, congrats!

Some sohc models came without a e-start. Only the dohc bikes where without kick start.
