1981 XS400 Scramblerized Build, eventually...

The foot pegs were already silver powder, so I scuffed them and powdered over them.

The old parts that I am powdering will get blasted first.

Coming along quickly, looking good.

Thanks, a little more done today.

Primed the frame and swingarm;

Disassembled the carbs and put them in Pine Sol.

Remnants of green gas was left in them and the slides were seized up. Fortunately the rubber bellows were OK.

I pulled the bodies of the carbs out after for hours and rinsed and dried them. The screws and other metal parts will soak tonight and tomorrow. Many parts will get powder coated before assembly.

They came out not bad. The Pine Sol dulls the finish, but a lot of parts will be powder coated, except the body.

I'm going to put a bit of time polishing them, then maybe a bit of clear coat.

The frame is fully dry now.

Needs a bit of sanding then paint!

There are rubber seals around the shafts that hold the butterfly valves. They break-down, letting air leak in and throw off the mixture. It's been the cause of more than a few members tuning issues.
Pine sol can also damage them.

Removing the two screws in each shaft will allow the butterfly plate to slide out, then the spring assembly on each shaft can be taken apart and the shafts slid out of place.

The seals themselves are still available from Yamaha as per: http://www.xs400.com/forum/showthread.php?t=12158
Apparently also available from Suzuki: http://www.xs400.com/forum/showthread.php?t=12037

Good info, I'll give that a check. I will have to drill out the screws though as they are buggered.

I wish I knew of a way to test the seal before you have to go that far. Don't know if replacement shafts are available.

Make sure to remove the needle jets also. In your pic you still have them in the carbs.

Yeah, I caught that when I was finish cleaning. I now have to re-soak the carb bodies. I'm pulling them the rest of the way apart too. I didn't realize the shaft had rubber seals.

OK, so I managed to wedge out the float valve seats, but I didn't have new ones, or any shaft seals. None the less, I cleaned the carbs as best I could. I am nowhere near starting the bike, and even when I am, I will have plenty of time to get the carb pieces.

SO, I cleaned up all the parts, powder coated the top and bottoms of the cabs, and the attaching hardware, added stainless hardware and loosely reassembled them. I didn't want to leave them in pieces because I would surely lose them. I lubed everything lightly to prevent corrosion.

Photos of the cleaning and assembly.

A little detour:

Nasty day out, and I had to work, so I did this after work. A little Carbon Fiber Wrap on the BMW. I started with the small piece to see if I could do it:

Not pro quality, but looks decent, so I did another:

Still not bad, so one more:

I'm totally satisfied. It isn't perfect, but definitely good enough.

Next, the big silver panels:

Hopefully tomorrow.

Trying to figure out what to CF wrap on the XS400.

Last sidetrack, then back to the Yamaha.

The side panels were a LOT harder, but I think they came out pretty good. The bike, to me, looks a hell of a lot better. I never liked the silver side panels!
