If your exhaust is in good shape I would keep the stock air boxes and intake H-pipe over using pods directly on the carbs. They will give you the best overall performance and save you lots of time with tuning issues.
It all depends on what look you are after. Here is a pic of my 81 that I have been doing. Had to swap out tires as the firestones were to big on the rear.

Good progress! Sounds great. How is the exhaust link pipe connected? Is that tape?

I have a XS400 1979 that I am also working on to make it a cafe racer,
Went wit ha 120/90 on the rear and a 100/90 on the front. I may have info in my thread not sure.

Do you think a wider tire could fit in the front?
It may but why ? the 100 fits great.
